Briggs, professor of mathematices in the O. A. C, for four years president of the Drain Normal school, in the public school work: for six teen years, a man of splendid attain ments and character, today was elected superintendent of the Albany schools, and will begin work within a few days. A POPULAR AFFAIR Was the Commercial Club's First Welcome,. Was in Ashland. J. T. Wentworth has returned from a visit with his son in Ashland, where the latter is at work on his second brick block, a fine structure. Ashland is im proving fast. It also has pavement, put down last summer, and since then it has never been'swept, the treasury not being in a condition for the extra expense. A Choir Benefit. The Carpenters, At a meeting of the carpenters of Albany last night, it was decided by a unanimous vote to adopt the eight hour a day rule from the first of February. Albany's first welcome to new comers yerterday afternoon and evening was eminently successful. The ladies were there in the afternoon, filling the com mercial club rooms. A Bplendid time socially was had. A light lunch was served and Miss Sox, Miss Bradley were heard on the piano and Misses Smith ana Markley in vocal solos. Hn the evening the men held forth, with another large crowd, and the 'men likewise got acquainted. 'Ihere was also a short program. In the absence of President Davis, Postmaster Van Winkle presided the first part and Man ager Struble the last part. The speakers were Hon. J. K. Weatherford. l. D. Gilbert and P. A. Young for the Club, and J. M. Hawkins, Agent R. K. Montgomery, horn in Oregon, Prof. Bradley, a former Michigan man, and Rev. Esso.i, another native, born Ore gonian, new comers duiing 1909. The talks were boosters, well seasoned with -wit and humor. There was also some music . Mr. Frank of the Eiler Co. manipulated the pianola and Marshall Woodworth gave Caruso and other selections. The decorations of the club rooms, under the direction of the Ladies Aux iliary, were tasty and attractive, calling; forth much favorable comment. . R. C. Churchill, assisted by Mr. Park Stalnaker, served a fine lunch of punch, sandwiches, and wafers. The committees did their work well and all concerned are entitled to credit for the success of the affair. These welcomes will unloubledly be made unnual affairs so popular Beemed tne nrst one. .
